I died fighting. Good. That's how I want to go the second time, too.

—Nana, Chapter 76

Nana ( (なな) Nana?), more infamously known as the Burier (はふる (もの) Hafuru-mono?), is the blessed vessel who was sealed away for committing a grave sin against Heaven.[1]

Appearance[]

Nana has the appearance of a girl in her early teens. She has dark, wavy hair that reaches her chin. The name she received from Bishamonten is imprinted on her left cheek, right underneath her eye.

When she first escaped the stone box, she was wearing cloth wrappings on her arms and legs, and a deer pelt over her shoulders.[2] Once she starts living with Arahabaki, she wears a black seifuku shirt with gray sweatpants underneath a kimono top.[3]

Immediately after being released by Bishamonten, she attacked her due to the fact Bishamonten smelled like the heavens. Having spent centuries being sealed away, she appears to have become somewhat savage, though she still retains her memories and sanity. She is disgusted with the heavens who not only killed her master but all of her friends and has stated she would rather die than submit to them. However, after Bishamonten promises to give her a resting place alongside her friends and revenge against heaven, she agrees. Even after agreeing, she still belittles Bishamonten due to the way she orders her around and because she is still a God associated with the heavens. She is easily amazed and startled by the world around her, at one point stating the trains were monsters that ate humans and hugging Bishamonten when she was startled though quickly jumping off her when she realized what she was doing. She has a temper and gets angry easily, understandably so. Because of her past, she has sympathy towards those with a grudge against heaven, as shown when she realizes the reason Father hates the heavens and Gods so much is because he once had someone he loved who the heavens murdered. She is also very murderous and vengeful towards heaven, as shown in Chapter 61 where she and Bishamonten slew numerous Gods but she still said it was not enough.

Nana's main goal is to get revenge on Heaven and finally die properly. She is so driven by this that even after having her human past revealed to her, she shook it off and declared that she was eager to die fighting again.

Skills & Abilities[]

Nana

Nana's vessel form.

  • Vessel Transformation: As Bishamon's vessel, Nana's name is Shikki ( (しっ) () ), and she transforms into both divine garments and divine weapons.
    • The garments consist of a full set of clothing: a skirt with a black belt and knee-high boots made of deer pelts, along with bindings around the chest and forearms, a cape and a mask covering the eyes designed like the head of a bird of prey with the addition of horns.
    • The weapons consist of one curved sword with a decorative wooden handle,[4] one shorter blade inside a waist sheath,[5] as well as a swarm of locusts that can devour enemies and serve as a mode of flight for her master.[6]
  • Invulnerability to the God's Greatest Secret: Nana has survived learning her true name and cause of death through Liberation.[7] It is later assumed by Yato that this was possible because she doesn't place value on her own death and is willing to throw away her life.[3]

Quotes[]

  • To Bishamonten: "Why are you stopping? Don't stop! We're a long way from granting my wish... Not yet. I want the head of the one above those clouds, the one who looks down on us from way up on that pedestal!" (Chapter 62)
  • To Yato, when asked about surviving God's Greatest Secret: "It's harder to see someone you love die." (Chapter 76)
  • To herself: "I hate the dark. It scares me, because I was inside that box for so long. But now... I feel warm... I have to treasure these moments. Because I know. I know there are days when morning never comes." (Chapter 92)

Trivia[]

  • Nana was named without the "Ha" suffix because Bishamonten never had any intention to consider her a part of her family or to become attached to her.[4]
  • When she was alive, Nana referred to her father as アヤ () Aya.[7] This term means "father" in the Tsugaru dialect, which reflects her Emishi origin.[8]
  • According to Nana, the name Arahabaki gave her wasn't like the names shinki have now but "shaped like a picture in a pattern."[3]
  • Nana's true name is unrevealed, but it is shown to contain the katakana ス su when an unnamed woman shouts it to her. Nana's relationship to this woman is also unspecified.[7]
