An Ablution ( (みそぎ) Misogi?) is a ritual held to purify a shinki of the sins they've committed. As it is an extremely painful process for the offending shinki, it is sometimes referred to as a "lynching" (私刑 (リンチ) rinchi?).

It can only be performed by shinki. As former humans, they have a sense of right and wrong and are therefore the only group capable of judging another shinki's sins. However, it seems that shinki may be reluctant to perform this ritual due to the risk it incurs and high stamina that it requires.[1]

Casting Sequence[]

Performing an Ablution requires three shinki to stand in the form of a triangle around the offending shinki. They recite the following incantation and isolate the offender by creating a Purgatory.

(Original Japanese text)

[Yatogami] ni sasageshi mitama nuguite tamawarishi on'na wo mamoran, kegare haraite zokushin wa mu ni akaki, naoki, tadashiki tamashii. Misogi misogite kiyoku are– Goku!
(Romaji transcription)

To safeguard the name, dedicated to [Yatogami] and having its spirit wiped clean, cast off thine impurity and extinguish thy carnal mind, thou bright, meek, upright soul. Strip thyself of uncleanness and be thou also pure. Purgatory!
(Official English translation)

Once begun, the Purgatory will start attacking the impurities attached on the shinki's body, causing tremendous pain to the offender and, to an extent, the god. To remove the impurities, the offending shinki must confess all of their sins and repent. However, should they fail or refuse to do so, the impurities will eat away at the soul and its bestowed name, changing the shinki into an ayakashi.

During the ceremony, the shinki performing the ritual must not leave their positions no matter what happen. The greatest safety risk is encountered when the offending shinki completely transforms into an ayakashi, as everyone present during the ceremony may be attacked.[1] The ritual is deemed successful when both the shinki and their master are free from any blight.
